Overactive bladder is a condition that is characterized by an increase in the number of times of urination for more than eight times during the day, and more than twice during sleeping hours, and it arises suddenly without warning, as urine is stored inside the bladder that has the muscle that pushes urine (Detrusor vesicae), which It shrinks and pushes the urine out of the bladder, and then the urine is allowed to flow, and the individual in the natural state cannot control this involuntary process.
● The causes of an overactive bladder, many factors may lead to contraction of the muscle that pushes urine repeatedly and thus push the urine out of the bladder, where this contraction occurs even if the bladder is not completely filled with urine, and among these factors are the following:
• The presence of infection in the urinary tract.
• Nerve damage, as a result of pelvic injury or surgery.
• Bladder stones.
• Having diabetes or kidney disease.
• Side effects after taking certain medications.
• Having neurological disorders, such as: Parkinson's disease, stroke, or multiple sclerosis.
• Overactive bladder is not a sign of incontinence. People with overtime bladder feel the urge to urinate frequently but can control this urge. However, there are people who may suffer from incontinence as a result of the strong urge to urinate.
● Diagnosing an overactive bladder, the doctor will diagnose an overactive bladder based on several questions
Questions to determine how uncomfortable it is for you to go to the toilet frequently. Your doctor may ask you to record the number of times you go to the toilet to show how active your bladder is.
After that, the doctor is expected to order a number of diagnostic tests, such as:
• Testing the ability of the bladder to store urine.
• A test to diagnose your ability to keep urine in the body.
• Test if the bladder muscle is working too much.
• Measure the amount of urine left in the bladder after going to the toilet.
• Test the components of urine.
● Treatment of overactive bladder. To reduce bladder activity, you must reduce the amount of drinks you drink on a daily basis, especially those that contain caffeine and alcohol. There are also certain foods that are recommended to be limited, such as: chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits, spicy foods,
In addition to the previous tips, here are ways to treat overactive bladder:
1. Do pelvic floor exercises.
The doctor may recommend training the bladder with pelvic floor exercises. This exercise involves continuous pressure on the bladder muscles to keep the urine in. Then we relax the muscles, and then we repeat the pressure again.
2. Medication treatment..
If changes in fluid intake and pelvic floor exercises do not help reduce the need to urinate, the next step is drug therapy. This treatment works on nerve receptors in the muscles of the bladder to inhibit involuntary contractions.
Women can be given some types of medication to treat
Overactive bladder, and these pills may be given in proportion to the production of estrogen by the ovary.
3. Botox treatment..
Botox treatment can have an effective role in preventing overactivity of the bladder, as the bladder muscle is injected with Botox, as Botox paralyzes the bladder in a molecular form and thus prevents overactivity, but leaves it space to control the issue of its emptying of urine.
4. Surgical treatment.
Surgery actually works to enlarge the bladder and repair tissues, and it is worth noting that this type of surgery is difficult and is only applied to patients in rare cases.
